Description
MITSUBISHI 4G63 / L300, CARB ENGINE
The Mitsubishi 4G63 engine was used in various vehicles, including the L300, and came in different versions over its lifespan. For the older L300 vans, the carburetor (CARB) version typically referred to the naturally aspirated SOHC 16V variant.
Important considerations
- SOHC 8V vs. SOHC 16V: There is a possibility that older L300s may have used an 8-valve version of the 4G63. You must provide your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to the supplier to ensure you get the correct 16-valve, naturally aspirated, carburetor-equipped engine.
- Inspect and verify mileage:Â When purchasing a used engine, always inquire about its mileage and the vehicle it came from. Given the age, a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is always recommended.
- Carburetor vs. EFI:Â Ensure the engine you receive is the carburetor version, as some later models switched to Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). If purchasing a complete engine, confirm if the carburetor is included and in good condition. If the carburetor is sold separately, local suppliers likeÂ

 offer new, aftermarket units.
- Common issues:Â The 4G63 SOHC is a reliable engine, but high-mileage units can suffer from oil leaks and head gasket failure. It is an interference engine, so proper maintenance of the timing belt is crucial.
